The Do's and Don'ts of Picking Up a Cat

Hey there, fellow cat enthusiasts! 🐾 If you’re a house and pet sitter like me, you’ve probably encountered your fair share of feline friends. But let’s be real: not all cats are super chill with the whole “being picked up” thing. So, here’s a quick guide on the do’s and don’ts when it comes to lifting your furry pals!

Do: APPROACH SLOWLY

Cats are all about that personal space! Before you swoop in for the scoop, take a moment to let the kitty feel comfortable. Get down to their level, and let them come to you. A gentle hand extended for sniffing works wonders!

DON’T: Surprise them

Imagine someone suddenly lifting you off the couch—yikes! Avoid surprising the cat by making your presence known. A soft voice can reassure them you mean no harm.

DO: Use the right technique

When it’s time to pick them up, make sure you support their body properly. Slip one hand under their chest and the other under their back legs. This way, they feel secure and less wiggly!

DON’T: Hold Them Too Tight

Cats love their comfort zone. Holding them too tightly can make them feel trapped and anxious. A gentle hold is key to keeping the peace!

DO: Look for Signs of Comfort

Before you lift them, watch for cues. If their ears are forward and they’re rubbing against you, they’re likely ready for some cuddles. But if they’re hissing or swatting, it’s a solid “no thanks” from them!

DON’T: Overdo It

Every cat has their limits. If Mr. Whiskers is squirming or trying to escape, it’s best to let them go. Not all cats are lap kitties, and that's totally okay!

Picking up a cat is an art form that requires patience and respect. Follow these do’s and don’ts, and you’ll find that even the most aloof felines can become your best buddies. Happy sitting, and may all your kitty encounters be cuddly! 🐱💖
